EXO: Arena is a live-action multiplayer game where your iPhone is your weapon and the battlefield is the world around you. Run to move, turn to aim, tap to shoot. Spin or sprint to avoid incoming fire and stay alive. Last one standing wins.
I designed EXO: Arena with Yury Gitman. Our inspiration was the 1982 film Tron, in which the protagonist plays combat games in a virtual world. We wanted to capture the essence of that movie: the exhilaration, the otherworldy environment, the personal, physical intensity of real-life play.
EXO: Arena comprises an iOS app, network protocols, and servers to support matching and gameplay. I designed and implemented these components. To achieve the look of a '70s-era arcade game, I wrote an OpenGL-based vector drawing library. A novel application of Bluetooth LE facilitates matching with nearby players.
